Summer is here! One of my favorite writers about happiness and habits, Gretchen Rubin, suggests we all consciously “Design Our Summer”. Especially when we have young kids, Summer holds this magical quality. But it also can go by super fast, and if we don’t intentionally make time for certain activities, seeing certain people, or other Summer bucket list items, the season can pass us by.
I also recognize that Summer brings unique challenges for parents: configuring the logistics of childcare when school is out, keeping our kids hydrated and protected from the sun, managing emotions when routines are disrupted with late bedtimes and more ice cream.
Designing our Summer doesn’t necessarily have to be big and bold, but it can be. Your intentions can be as simple as drinking a cup of iced tea outside each day, having a few picnics, or watching a family movie every weekend. They can be adventurous like taking your family on a big trip, trying a new activity like kayaking or rock climbing, or going swimming every sunny day. Been meaning to host a cookout for friends you rarely see? Or go to a beach you haven’t checked out yet? Or read a book series? Summer could be the perfect time.
Summer has just begun, and it’s not too late to design how you want it to feel, and what energy you want to create in your family this season.
Warmly,
Dr. Lizzie
