My husband and I enjoy entertaining our friends and family at our home, and have hosted a range of celebrations from an annual neighborhood pre-trick-or-treating pizza party, to family Thanksgiving, to outdoor movie nights.
Inviting people to our home and developing yearly rituals and traditions helps nurture our relationships, larger communities, and fun in our lives.
One of my favorite parties we hosted was a backyard bash for my then preschooler. When asked what theme she wanted her party to be, she replied, “potato”. And we ran with it.
We had a taste test where guests could vote for their favorite form of potato: baked, chip, mashed, tot, and french fried (regular and curly). I made some stampers by cutting a few potatoes in half and pressing cookie cutters into them which we had alongside some paper and ink pads. We also put a small bag of fingerling potatoes out with some toothpicks for people to create and play with. And, in full disclosure, we rented a non-potato themed bounce house to keep those little ones moving.
The kids had a blast (as they probably will no matter where or how they are partying together) and the parents were entertained and chuffed with the unexpected yet relatable theme. Young and old, everyone loves potatoes.
I want to remember the Potato Party and its lessons. Investing in our friendships, our family, and our community by hosting is worth the effort. It doesn’t have to be overly complicated or elaborate. Less can be more. The unexpected and slightly wacky can be more memorable than the ultra refined and fancy. And, everyone loves potatoes.
Warmly,
Dr. Lizzie
